I've been under contract as a Virtual Material Production Artist at Nike since 2021. My main objective is to create perfect digital twins of fabric samples from the extensive materials library.
I use the Xtex Vizoo scanner to create high-end scans that not only have a texture scan, but contain other important maps for 3D visualization such as normal, displacement, and roughness. The artistry comes in tweaking many aspects of the images so that they represent the materials as accurately as possible.
I take those scans and combine them with physics data that I've captured and package the two together in our garment design program (CLO) so that designers can design with things like weight, stretch, and thickness included. The general idea is to create digital twins so that nearly endless iterations can be made before a sample ever has to get loaded on a plane and shipped oversees, only to find that a specific quality of a material would render it unwearable.
